Is this the best idea ever or am I a moron?

Ha. Tricked you. It's the best idea ever AND I am a moron. Just about a year ago, I paid about $3K for a beautiful engagement ring and convinced a woman to marry me. Later that year sadly we went our separate ways. I have been trying to sell the ring at about 30% cost since October.

Sometimes I get fish on the line offering me about 20% cost or so (about $600) but so far, something always comes up and I haven't been able to part with the ring.

Then today, it hit me. Why not try to trade the ring for a vehicle? I mean I could probably take the ring to a store and get $400-450, but that's boring and frankly not THAT much money.

What is the worst that can happen? I trade the ring and then suddenly have to move and trade the car for scrap for about $200- 250? I am willing to take this $200 gamble.

I have my doubts this will actually work, but unless there's a really good reason not to do this, I am going to try to do this.

Earlier I saw one of these listed for about 2/3rd the price of the ring. Aim high!!

Selling your ring to a jewelry store is like selling a year-old car to a scrap yard. Sell it retail.

Not a bad idea at all. Although it will likely still take some time to sell.

Worst case, have you looked at turning it in to one of those companies that give CA$H FOR GOLD!!! Seriously, it might be worth looking into.

Or trade it for a computer, or a boat, or a month of rent, etc. Sounds like a great idea to me. If it doesn't work just hold onto it until you find someone else you want to give it to.

Oh boy do I feel you. Had a ring custom made, about 7 grand, for a sure thing. Then the sure thing said no.

Lucky I knew a guy who knew the guy in the Diamond District that sold me the ring. He gave me almost all the money back, and a thousand dollar store credit for the rest of it. Some years later I used the credit to buy my current significant other a string of pearls. That jeweler - such a mensch.

And if you want to have your genitals invert into your body, try returning an engagement ring. Especially a custom one. It still hurts.

How will I save by keeping it to myself? If I give it to another girl and she every finds out....I will have two ex fiancees.

Usually when I take it to the jewelers I say I inherited it. What do they know?

That sucks though, I have been trying to get some moneys for it, and have almost been successful about 4 times with potential buyers, so now I'm just like "meh. Free car maybe."

Glad you found the one in the end.

Tips :

* have it polished and advertise with high quality pictures

* list on eBay or local auction

* try to trade for man jewelry for yourself (maybe a watch at store you bought it from)

* don't rush - gold / diamonds are going up in value

You'll save yourself massively by not spending such an amount of money again. Taking a loss of $2k+ isn't worth it IMO.

I can see having given it to another woman being perceived negatively but simply explaining that she didn't end up being the one should put that to rest, I think.

Also, I seem to recall some jewelry stores taking back engagement rings for a refund if it doesn't work out. Seems like a good thing to do on their part.

That doesn't sound like a bad idea at all.

I remember seeing a comment about using phrases like "wife," "caught" or "won't let me keep" in the search bar for Craigslist to get cheap vehicles a long time ago on the front page. You could try to trade with one of those people since it's a high chance their significant other is upset at them for the car. So two birds with one stone for both of you. The seller gets rid of the vehicle and a present to put out the fire while you get to unload the ring and obtain a hoon-mobile.

You seem sort of determined to get a car out of this, but I'll give my $.02 anyway.

Do you have a lab report for the diamond? If not, it might behoove you to invest in getting one. Once you have that, sell it on Ebay. Lab reports help sell diamonds, since pictures can be deceiving. With a lab report on Ebay you can usually expect to get probably 70% of your purchase price back, or more. I've known a few people who have sold diamonds on Ebay with good success.

01/29/2015 at 09:25

Kinja'd!!!0

Oh really? That would actually be something worth doing then. If I got something like 70% I'd forget this car mumbo jumbo. I've never used ebay before. Is it just auctions or are there fixed price good also?

Kinja'd!!! Stapleface-Now Hyphenated! > thebigbossyboss
01/29/2015 at 09:30

Kinja'd!!!0

You can set a reserve price for your goods if you want to, so you don't take a total bath. I do know that Ebay takes a portion of sales in fees, but I don't know what percentage. Someone better versed in Ebay might be able to better answer this question.

Staple face!! I am getting serious about listing this thing on ebay. I have some type of card that explains the cuts, quality, the inscribing on the girdle etc.

Is this the lab report you're talking about? Or should I get it from a jeweler that didn't sell me the piece?

It's from GS labratories.

Kinja'd!!! Stapleface-Now Hyphenated! > thebigbossyboss
02/24/2015 at 10:45

Kinja'd!!!0

Nope, no need to go to a separate jeweler. This is what I was referring to. If you can, scan/take a picture of this report and put it in your listing. People who buy diamonds like to have reports, so they know at least something about what they're getting.

Kinja'd!!! thebigbossyboss > Stapleface-Now Hyphenated!

Thank you. My uncle (ebay seller in chief) says that I should start my ebay career by buying and selling small things and work up to the ring. Since I have a few odds and ends I wouldn't mind selling, I suspect he is wise.

Not sure if you care or not (but you're being told anyways...lol). I decided to take my ring to an independent jeweller and consign it. I take 70% and he takes 30%. Currently listed at $1300 so I'b be taking about $915, which is decent!
